Rafał Górak has made it clear that GKS Katowice will need to be fully alert when Widzew Łódź arrive on 31 October 2026 at 20:15, with the visitors still close to the relegation zone and searching for points. On paper, this is a meeting between a side in eighth place and another in 14th, but the GKS coach is treating it as a much more serious test than the table alone might suggest.
That caution is understandable. GKS Katowice have already seen off Widzew twice in 2026, winning 0:1 in a league match in February before going through after penalties in the quarterfinal of the STS Puchar Polski at the start of March, following 120 minutes. But Górak’s message before this latest PKO BP Ekstraklasa meeting was not about past results. It was about the challenge in front of his team and the need to handle a rival he views as dangerous in every area.
Górak: Widzew are dangerous and ambitious
The GKS coach said Widzew are “a dangerous rival” with “great ambitions on every level”, adding that the club is only at the beginning of a new process. He pointed to the fact that this kind of transition is never easy, especially when the issue is points, and stressed that the visitors still have enough quality to make life difficult for anyone.
He was equally direct about the squad itself. Górak said Widzew’s style and the players at their disposal deserve only praise, describing them as having many unusual, high-level footballers. He also highlighted the presence of a young and promising coach, arguing that the club has the tools to grow stronger.
Why the home advantage matters
For GKS Katowice, the return to Nowej Bukowej is part of the equation. Górak stressed that being at home always helps his side and that the team has been working hard to create the most difficult possible conditions for the opponent. The atmosphere, he suggested, can matter here, especially in a fixture that carries a little more edge because of recent history.
He also framed the game as one that should feel significant on both sides. In his view, this is a meeting between two respected names in Polish football, and that alone should make it a compelling contest. Górak said he is looking forward to it, but the message beneath the optimism is clear: GKS cannot afford to treat Widzew’s poor recent results as a sign that the visitors will be easy to handle.
With GKS Katowice in eighth and Widzew Łódź in 14th, the points picture gives the home side a degree of comfort, while the visitors need the result more urgently. That is why this match matters beyond the history between the clubs. For Widzew, it is another chance to respond. For GKS, it is a chance to prove that their home setting and recent edge in the fixture can translate into another important league result.
