This was not the sort of team news Al-Hilal needed on the eve of another important league test. Salem Al-Dawsari, their captain and one of their main attacking outlets, was ruled out again after his injury flared up once more, leaving Al-Hilal to face Al-Fateh without one of the players who should make the biggest difference in tight games.

The timing is what makes it sting. Al-Hilal hosted Al-Fateh at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh on Saturday in the twelfth round of the Roshn League, and the table context already told its own story: Al-Hilal were third, while Al-Fateh sat 17th. That is the kind of gap that should invite control, not uncertainty. But Al-Hilal have been carrying far too much injury noise for comfort, and this was another reminder that their season is being asked to absorb more chaos than it should.

Al-Dawsari’s absence was not random, either. He had already been dropped from the squad on 10 October before the Clasico against Al-Ittihad, then started against Al-Shamal of Qatar last Tuesday. By Friday, though, he had visited Al-Hilal’s medical clinic after training ended, and the latest setback shut him down again. That makes it the second time this month he has been removed from the squad just hours before kick-off, which is not exactly the sort of rhythm any manager wants around a key attacker.

Al-Hilal’s margin for error is getting smaller

Al-Hilal were already without Gabriel Martinelli after he picked up an injury during the 3-2 win over Al-Qadsiah last Friday, while Crysencio Summerville was also being brought back after suspension. So this was not a case of one missing star being replaced by another. It was a pile-up of availability issues, the sort that forces a team to lean harder on structure, patience and depth.

That is where the concern starts to sharpen. Al-Hilal should be judged not only by the standings, but by how much quality they can actually put on the pitch when the pressure rises. Third place is respectable enough in isolation. But if the attack keeps losing key pieces at the wrong moment, then standings talk becomes a little too comforting for what is clearly a fragile situation. Against a side in 17th, Al-Hilal should still expect to impose themselves. The real question is whether they can do it cleanly, or whether this latest setback makes the whole operation look more vulnerable than the table suggests.

For now, the simple truth is this: Salem Al-Dawsari being ruled out again is more than a short-term blow. It is another warning that Al-Hilal’s title push is being forced to operate through injury trouble, and that is rarely a comfortable place to be when the fixtures start to matter.
