Diane Morgan is back as Philomena Cunk in the first trailer for Cunk on Cinema, the new six-episode mockumentary that arrives on Nov. 15. The release puts the series on the clock: iPlayer and Two get it in the U.K., while Netflix carries it outside the U.K. and Ireland.

The run is built around six 15-minute episodes, a compact format that suits the character’s blunt approach to grand subjects. Morgan and Charlie Brooker created Cunk, and the new series keeps Philomena Cunk in her familiar lane of deadpan certainty and ill-informed questions while she sets out to explain cinema.

Al Campbell and 23 experts

Al Campbell directs the series as Cunk moves through the history of film, from the invention of the camera to the New Wave filmmakers of the 1960s, then onward to CGI and the future of AI. Diane Morgan sets 12 November Cunk on Cinema return on Two fits the rollout pattern: this is a tightly timed launch, not a slow burn.

Cunk is also due to face 23 experts, including Michael Bay, Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Pemberton, Steven E. de Souza, Seamus McGarvey, Mark Kermode, Mark Cousins, Isabel Stevens, Helen O’Hara, Catherine Bray, Bryony Dixon, David Rubin, Jim Dowdall and Kaleem Aftab. That interview setup is the series engine; the format depends on expert voices colliding with a host who treats film history as if she is covering it for real.

Philomena Cunk’s deadpan method

Cunk will again try to demystify cinema while sitting in lumpy seats with stale popcorn, which is exactly where the character’s act works best. The series is billed as Cunk’s most glamorous outing yet, but the joke still comes from the same contradiction: she presents herself as serious, then undercuts the subject with questions that are anything but.

That friction is the point of a Cunk project, and it is why the trailer matters more than a routine promo drop. Jim Al-Khalili and Ashley Jackson return from Cunk on Life, giving the new series some continuity, while Charlie Brooker, Diane Morgan, Jessica Rhoades and Sam Ward serve as executive producers. The trailer says the machinery is in place; Nov. 15 is when viewers find out whether the six-episode format keeps the pace tight enough to match the premise.

Nov. 15 rollout

Nov. 15 is the date that turns this from a tease into a release schedule. iPlayer and Two carry the series in the U.K., Netflix takes it outside the U.K. and Ireland, and Philomena Cunk gets another chance to turn cinema history into deadpan collateral. The smartest move now is simple: watch the trailer, then watch how the format uses 15-minute episodes to keep the interviews moving instead of letting the gag overstay its welcome.
