Sovereignty delivered the headline result at Keeneland, winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic and giving Godolphin its first ever victory in the race. The last major prize of the meeting went to last year’s Kentucky Derby winner, with Junior Alvarado guiding the colt to a landmark finish for the operation.
The Breeders’ Cup Classic is the feature event on the card, and this year’s running carried extra significance after Magnitude was scratched earlier in the week because of injury. That left a field of seven runners, but Sovereignty handled the assignment and kept the focus on a familiar name at the top of the sport.
Greg summed up the moment on the call: “It’s all over and it’s all Sovereignty, last year’s Kentucky Derby winner adds the Classic to his record!” He also noted the broader achievement for the stable: “That’s a first ever success in the Classic for the Godolphin operation, delivered by the colt who also supplied their first ever win in the Kentucky Derby win last year.”
What the result means
For Godolphin, the win completes a major target at the top level and adds another important line to Sovereignty’s record after his Derby breakthrough last year. It also closes out a strong Keeneland meeting with a result that will stand out well beyond the day itself.
The Breeders’ Cup show now moves on, with next year’s event heading to Belmont Park for the first time since 2005 after a major redevelopment there. For now, though, the Breeders’ Cup results belong to Sovereignty, and the Classic belongs to Godolphin for the first time.
