At least seven people were injured in a Bloomington shooting near Indiana University early Sunday morning. Bloomington Deputy Chief of Police Ryan Pedigo said officers heard multiple gunshots near Kirkwood Avenue and Grant Street around 1:30 a.m.
The shooting happened during homecoming weekend, about three blocks from the IU campus. Police later took one person into custody and found a gun nearby.
Ryan Pedigo on the scene
Pedigo said officers later saw a man with a gun running from the scene. He also said the victims’ conditions were unknown, and police were working to learn whether any other people were injured in the chaos and had not yet reported it.
Shell casings of various calibers were found on the sidewalk near the scene. The location is a popular party destination for students, and the shooting came after the Indiana football Hoosiers beat Minnesota in an overtime stunner earlier in the evening.
Police custody and the shooter
Police said no deaths had been reported. They also said they did not know whether the person taken into custody was the shooter, leaving that identification question open as investigators sort through the crowd, the gun, and the casings.
For people who were near Kirkwood Avenue, the immediate practical issue is whether everyone who was hurt has already come forward. Police are still trying to answer that before the scene can be fully sorted out.
