Von Miller said Nicolas Cage did not get the Madden movie voice right after reacting to a new clip from Prime Movies X. The Cowboys linebacker said Cage’s acting worked, but the vocal delivery did not match John Madden’s unmistakable sound.
Free Range w/ Von Miller
Miller made the criticism on Free Range w/ Von Miller, where he drew a sharp line between the performance and the voice. “No. No, man. Like, if you didn’t know Madden, if you didn’t know what was going on, like, his voice is totally different,” he said. He added, “He’s a great actor, but he didn’t get Madden’s voice right. Nah, that was Nicolas Cage voice.”
Prime Movies X clip
The new clip arrived on Tuesday, October 27, and showed Cage’s Madden in the broadcast booth beside Pat Summerall, played by Joel Murray. It placed the two in the same color-commentary setup that made Madden and Summerall a familiar pairing on game days, which is exactly why voice and cadence now matter as much as appearance in the final cut.
Miller also pointed out that the movie is already finished. “It’s already shot and done with already, but if you really saw what John Madden did and what he meant to football as I did, he didn’t get the voice right. The acting, he did get that right, though. But what could you do? Like that’s, that’s the best you can do, and Nicolas Cage is a great actor, so we just gotta ride with it,” he said.
Robbie Harvey reaction
Robbie Harvey went further, writing, “This is an embarrassment to his legacy,” in response to the clip. That leaves the film with a familiar problem for portrayals of major public figures: the visual impression can land, but a mismatched voice can overpower everything else once the audience hears it.
For now, that reaction is the story. The movie has already been shot, so the debate is no longer about shaping the performance; it is about whether Cage’s finished take on Madden will feel close enough when viewers finally see the broadcast booth scene in full.
