The Gold Gloves are set to be announced on March 1, giving baseball fans one of the early offseason checkpoints to watch as award season moves forward. For the Mariners, the notable name in the mix is Cole Young, who has been listed as a finalist.
The calendar does not stop there. On March 2, free agency officially opens at 5 PM ET, Silver Slugger finalists are announced and BBWAA Award finalists are also revealed. Then on March 17, the Silver Sluggers are announced, adding another milestone to a busy stretch on the MLB offseason schedule.
What the date means
Because this is part of an MLB offseason calendar, the schedule is meant to help track the league's next major dates. It is also worth noting that the timeline is subject to change if a looming lockout in early December forces adjustments.
For now, the key Gold Gloves question is simple: when the winners are announced on March 1, the Mariners will have at least one player in the conversation. Cole Young's finalist status gives Seattle something specific to follow as the award calendar begins to take shape.
