More than 437,000 Iowans had already voted as Election Day neared, and those still deciding could still cast a ballot on Monday or vote on Tuesday. For anyone searching when do polls open on election day, the practical answer is simple: Iowa voters who have not yet voted still have a final chance to act before the day itself.

The early-vote total had already surpassed the 2022 midterms, with Iowa Democrats holding a slight edge. About 53,000 more Democrats had cast ballots than Republicans, and nearly 85,000 no-party voters had already participated.

Rita Hart, the Iowa Democratic Party chair, said the party had knocked doors in every one of Iowa's 99 counties. She said the effort had focused on one-on-one conversations and on reaching voters in places where the party had renewed its presence.

“We have knocked doors in every one of our 99 counties. We’ve got county parties that have been reinvigorated in many of the smaller counties that maybe haven’t had that kind of presence for while,” Hart said. “And have had campaign offices in places that that have not traditionally held a campaign office before. That's our effort in making sure that every person is involved in this midterm election because its such an important election.”

Hart said the party’s method was built around direct contact. “Its all about one-on-one conversations,” she said. “Its about firing up people to show up and help volunteer. Its about talking to folks about what their concerns are.”

That push ran alongside the voting numbers already in the books. Democrats had a lead in early voting, but the remaining pool still included thousands of voters who had not yet participated, including no-party voters and people in counties where the campaign had expanded its reach.

Iowans who had not voted still had two choices left: cast an early ballot on Monday or vote on Tuesday on Election Day. For readers who are still deciding, the remaining window is narrow, and the only thing left to do is use it before polls close for the day.
