Andover Town F.C.’s Hampshire Premier League Division One match against Paulsgrove ended in extraordinary fashion on Saturday, with the game abandoned after the visitors were reduced to six players while trailing 8-0. It was a result that left Robbie Skeates describing the afternoon as a complete farce, while the league confirmed an investigation is now under way.
The fixture had already swung heavily in Andover Town’s favour before the abandonment. Seven goals came in the first half, with Paulsgrove reaching the interval 7-0 down but still with 11 players on the pitch. Early in the second half they returned with seven, but after Andover Town scored again to make it 8-0, the match could not continue once Paulsgrove dropped below the minimum number of players.
What happened to the match?
The key issue was simple: the league said a match may not continue if either team has fewer than seven players. That threshold was breached after Paulsgrove were reduced to six, forcing the abandonment in a 12th-tier contest that had already become highly unusual.
According to Paulsgrove’s social media posts, injuries were being blamed for the collapse in numbers. Whatever the explanation, the game reached a point where the laws of the competition could no longer allow it to go on.
Robbie Skeates: 'A complete farce'
After the match, Andover Town boss Robbie Skeates made clear how surreal the situation felt from his side. He said he had been involved in football for a long time and had genuinely never seen anything like what happened from an opposition team.
He also pointed out that all 11 of Paulsgrove’s players had walked off at half-time with Andover Town leading 7-0, before four of them apparently could not continue after the break. As Skeates put it, his team scored almost immediately to make it 8-0, and from there the afternoon turned into a complete farce.
What happens next?
Andover Town are set to submit a report to the league, while the Hampshire Premier Football League has already said an investigation is under way. For a 16-team league in the 12th tier, the incident is likely to prompt questions not only about this match, but about how the abandonment unfolded and why Paulsgrove could not finish with the minimum seven players.
