Open enrollment for the healthcare marketplace begins Sunday, Nov. 1, giving households a window to review coverage before deadlines that determine when new plans start. People who enroll by Dec. 15 can secure coverage effective Jan. 1, 2027, while later sign-ups remain open until Jan. 15.
Mychal Walker, president of the National Association of Benefits and Insurance Professionals, said open enrollment can be overwhelming. He told households to look back at what their healthcare expenditures consisted of over the past 12 months, then compare that with expected future needs and their budget.
Healthcare.gov and the deadline
The same enrollment window applies to people using state-based marketplaces or Healthcare.gov. Walker said the timing makes planning more important because the rates from the year before are probably not going to be the same.
For households that want coverage to begin on Jan. 1, 2027, Dec. 15 is the cutoff for enrolling or changing a plan. People who miss that initial deadline can still enroll before Jan. 15, but their coverage would take effect on Feb. 1.
Walker on premiums
Walker said premiums are generally expected to rise this year. He said the increase reflects inflation, the cost of healthcare from a provider standpoint, and labor costs, which can push rates higher than the year before.
He also said households should review what their healthcare requirements and needs are and try to anticipate future needs. That review can include whether a plan fits within a financial budget and covers likely medical use over the coming year.
Medicare and other windows
The marketplace schedule overlaps with separate open enrollment periods for Medicare beneficiaries and many employer-sponsored plans in October and November. For households buying through the marketplace, the practical step is to compare last year’s spending with the new premium and coverage terms before Dec. 15 if they want January coverage.
Walker said, “the fact that it's coming right in the middle of midterm elections and healthcare is on the forefront of everybody's mind, especially from an affordability standpoint, it is vitally important to make sure you have an insurance professional to help you navigate through the maze.”
