Steffan Powell will join Naga Munchetty as the new co-host of 5 Live Breakfast from mid-January 2027, after Radio 5 Live made the appointment public. He is already a familiar voice to listeners on the programme, having co-hosted it on Fridays and Sundays.
The new full-time Breakfast role does not begin until mid-January 2027, even though the appointment has already been announced. That leaves a clear gap between the public naming of the pair and the start of the new programme.
Steffan Powell and Naga Munchetty
Powell said Radio 5 Live holds a special place in his heart and that it was one of the reasons he trained to be a journalist. He added that being trusted, all these years later, to look after its Breakfast show full-time is a privilege.
He also said he could not wait to get started and described the chance to sit alongside Naga Munchetty each day as a joy. Powell said the pair will put listeners first, cut through the noise and try to make sense of what is going on in the world, while focusing on the stories that matter most.
Radio 5 Live in Salford
Richard Maddock said Powell has been a hugely valued part of the 5 Live team for many years. He said Powell has a fantastic relationship with listeners and brings sharp journalistic instincts, infectious enthusiasm and a genuine ability to connect with audiences across the whole of the UK.
Maddock added that Powell will join Munchetty on Breakfast and help lead the flagship programme into its next chapter. The programme is produced in Salford, and Powell's move sets the next full-time presenting team for the show before it starts in mid-January 2027.
Before January 2027
Powell's route to the new role includes eight years as a presenter and senior reporter at Radio 1's Newsbeat before joining Radio 5 Live. His broadcasting career has since spanned news, current affairs, politics, sport and factual programming across radio and television.
For listeners, the practical change arrives only when the new Breakfast programme launches in mid-January 2027. Until then, the announcement fixes the pairing and gives the audience the team that will open the next stage of 5 Live Breakfast.
