Jesus de Miguel was at the centre of a frightening medical emergency during Tenerife's Segunda Division match against Andorra, with the game suspended after the striker suffered a serious head injury and cardiac arrest following a violent collision.
The incident came in second-half stoppage time when de Miguel chased a high ball behind the halfway line and collided with Andorra goalkeeper Uno. He fell unconscious immediately, turning a live football match at Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium into an urgent medical situation.
More than five minutes of treatment on the pitch
Medical staff rushed onto the field and worked on de Miguel for more than five minutes before he was stretchered into an ambulance. Resuscitation was then performed inside the vehicle as he was taken to Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria University Hospital.
Later reports said his pulse had been restored and he had regained normal breathing, but he remained unconscious in hospital. What began as a competitive league fixture between Tenerife and Andorra became, in a matter of seconds, a scene focused entirely on the player’s condition and the response around him.
The match was suspended after the emergency, with the football result becoming secondary to the immediate concern for de Miguel’s health. In moments like this, the priorities are clear: medical care first, everything else afterwards.
