The Hawks will head into Monday night without Jalen Johnson, and that changes the shape of this matchup almost immediately. Atlanta ruled out the All-Star forward for the Oct. 26 game against the Pacers after he had been listed questionable with a left ankle sprain.
That matters because Johnson has become one of the most important pieces in Atlanta's rotation, especially in a road game where depth already has to carry more weight. The Hawks enter the night with a losing record, and losing a player of Johnson's size and versatility only makes the margin for error smaller against an Indiana team dealing with its own issues.
The Pacers, for their part, have not exactly been stable either. They were coming off a 98-90 loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday after scoring 136 points in Brooklyn on Oct. 25 behind a double-double from Tyrese Haliburton. That swing says plenty about Indiana right now: the offense can still explode, but the absence of Haliburton leaves it far less reliable from game to game.
There is recent history here, too. On Jan. 31, the Pacers snapped the Hawks' four-game win streak in the series, a reminder that this matchup can tilt quickly when one side loses control of the tempo. Atlanta also knows how fragile a scoring night can become after its 121-99 loss at New Orleans on Halloween night, when the offense never found enough consistency to stay close.
So the headline entering Monday is not just that Johnson is out. It is that both teams are walking into a matchup with lineup questions, which puts a premium on execution, rebounding and who can handle the first difficult stretch better. If the Hawks are going to keep this game close, they will need production from elsewhere because the player who might have changed the geometry of the night is not available.
