Archive of Our Own Faces Up to Four Weeks Offline for Ao3 Fanfiction

Archive of Our Own took AO3 fanfiction offline after a security incident, leaving the site down for maintenance on October 29. The platform said full restoration could take up to four weeks, while some features may return sooner in a degraded state.

The site serves 11 million users and hosts more than 18 million original works, so even a temporary outage reaches a very large reading and writing base. For readers who rely on downloaded copies and writers who post serially, the slowdown is more than a nuisance; it interrupts a system built around constant access.

October 29 maintenance notice

An AO3 admin posted on October 29 that the website was down for maintenance, then the site said a security incident had occurred and response efforts were in the early stages. Archive of Our Own, founded in 2007 and run by the Organization for Transformative Works, has become one of the main homes for fan fiction readers who follow Destiel and Dramione content, along with other pairing-heavy communities.

The platform said it might come back in a degraded state before full restoration, which means some functions could be disabled while the core service returns. For a site that exists to host and organize huge amounts of user-uploaded work, that kind of partial reopening is the practical middle ground: enough to bring readers back, not enough to promise everything works the way it did before.

11 million users at risk

AO3 said it did not believe its user database had been stolen, but it still urged users to exercise caution and change their passwords for the site. That advice creates the oddest part of the outage: the platform is asking for a security response even while saying the main database does not appear to have been taken.

Fans responded by building Google Docs of links to downloaded stories as survival guides for the AO3 apocalypse, with some documents organized by fictional character pairings, or ships. One fan account on X tagged AO3, the FBI, the CIA, and Uber Support in a post about the outage, a reminder that the shutdown landed in the middle of a community used to improvising when access disappears.

Up to four weeks

Up to four weeks is a long window for a site with 11 million users and more than 18 million original works, especially when the outage coincided with No Nut November and fresh interest last year pushed tens of thousands of stories featuring Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov onto the platform. The immediate practical takeaway is simple: save what you need locally, change your password, and expect partial service before the archive is fully back.
