Ella Lily Hyland says Black Doves accent felt like a privilege

Ella Lily Hyland said keeping her accent in Black Doves felt important, calling it a privilege to carry it into the Netflix drama. The Irish actress, who plays Williams, said the choice mattered because accents like hers are not often heard on screen.

Hyland told the Press Association: "I feel like with acting you’re always trying to be something away from yourself, especially with our accents, and to embody that is is such a privilege." She added: "You don’t hear these accents often on screen and I think it feels good to represent that on a big stage."

The comments place Black Doves in a more specific lane than a standard spy drama. The show is using Welsh and Irish accents as part of its identity, with Gabrielle Creevy and Ella Lily Hyland both speaking about that representation while the second season approaches.

Hyland is from Carlow and is 28, while Creevy is from Port Talbot and is 30. Creevy plays Eleanor in Black Doves, and Keira Knightley plays Helen Webb. For a Netflix series with a broad audience, that combination gives the accents more reach than they would usually get in a single role or one-off scene.

Hyland had already appeared in the adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero, where she starred opposite Anjelica Huston and Clarke Peters. That makes the Black Doves role part of a run in projects that place her voice and presence in high-profile settings, not just in one accent-driven performance.

Black Doves on November 5

The second season of Black Doves will premiere on Netflix on November 5. That sets the next checkpoint for viewers who want to see whether the show keeps the accents intact across a bigger rollout, and whether Williams remains one of the clearest examples of that choice on screen.
