Rich McCormick Wins 7th District as Cobb County Election Results Shape Georgia

Cobb County election results helped decide several Georgia races Tuesday, and the declared Rich McCormick the winner over Tony Kozycki in the 7th Congressional District. Voters across Cobb County also weighed in on congressional, state and local contests as ballots were counted into early Wednesday.

McCormick carried several northern counties across the district, while Kozycki posted an advantage in Fulton County. That split showed how a district race can turn on county-level returns as each batch of ballots is added to the total.

Lucy McBath in the 6th District

Democratic Rep. Lucy McBath secured reelection over Republican challenger Kevin E. Martin in the 6th Congressional District. She built a dominant lead across Cobb, Fulton and Douglas counties, giving her campaign room that McCormick did not need in the 7th.

Those results left voters in Cobb County with a direct hand in two separate congressional contests. The county sat inside the path of both the 6th and 7th district tallies, and the local vote helped determine which side led as the count moved forward.

Georgia races on Cobb ballots

Local voters also faced a crowded slate of General Assembly matchups in Cobb County, with ballots cast across eleven state House districts. The local ballot further included two county administrative offices and an infrastructure sales tax referendum, adding county-specific choices to the federal races at the top of the ticket.

As ballots were counted early Wednesday, Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms opened a commanding lead over Republican Rick Jackson in the race for Georgia governor. Democratic nominees also pulled ahead for lieutenant governor with Josh McLaurin, secretary of state with Penny Brown Reynolds and attorney general with Tanya Miller.

Fulton County advantage

The clearest complication in the night’s count came from the 7th District itself: McCormick won the race even as Kozycki held an advantage in Fulton County. That left the district outcome dependent on how returns from Cobb County and the other counties were added together, not on one county alone.

For voters who cast ballots in Cobb County, the practical takeaway is simple: their precinct returns were part of the totals that decided which candidates moved ahead across congressional and statewide races. The remaining question is the size of the margins county by county, which is what shows how much room each candidate had as the count tightened.
