Chipotle Posts 2.1% Sales Gain in Third Straight Quarter

Chipotle posted a 2.1% comparable-store sales increase in the third quarter of 2026, its third straight quarter of growth. The company is getting more traffic and higher ticket values, but the gains are still filtering through a margin base pressured by inflation and labor costs.

Chipotle sales rose 2.1%

2.1% comparable-store sales growth followed 0.5% in the first quarter and 2.2% in the second. Transactions rose 0.6% in the quarter, while pricing added about 2.7%, showing that the sales rebound came from both more visits and higher checks rather than from one isolated driver.

$3.29 billion in revenue, nearly 10% higher than a year earlier, gave the turnaround a bigger top line to work with. Chipotle said its reward program, revamped in April, now has over 24 million active members, and more than 33% of sales now come from loyalty members, a mix that gives the company a recurring customer base to lean on as it pushes the recovery further. Chipotle buyback spending also remains part of the capital picture, even as operating performance stays the focus.

Margins narrowed to 23.3%

120 basis points, or hundredths of a percent, came off restaurant-level operating margin, which fell to 23.3% from a year earlier. Adjusted earnings per share declined 7% to $0.27, so the higher sales base did not fully offset the cost pressure from wages, labor usage and pricing changes inside the restaurants.

84 company-owned locations and five international ones with partners opened in the quarter, taking the total to 4,267 restaurants. Chipotle also opened restaurants in Mexico, Saudi Arabia and South Korea, with Mexico said to have exceeded expectations and Saudi Arabia opening volumes setting a new record. Chipotle Halloween food deals and Chipotle salmonella response show how menu and operational moves can shape demand and execution at the same time.

Chipotle's 2026 sales target

2% or more is the fourth-quarter comparable-store sales target, and Chipotle said its exit rate for the year should land around 3% to 4%. The company also plans to raise prices by 3% in the fourth quarter, a move that should help revenue but may test how much of the loyalty-driven traffic can absorb another round of higher checks.

3% to 4% on the exit rate leaves Chipotle with a late-year benchmark that is still modest, but more durable than the declines it saw before the current run of positive comparable-store sales. How much of that turnaround is coming from loyalty growth versus pricing and limited-time menu items is still the open issue, and the next read will be whether the fourth quarter can hold above that 2% floor while margins stay above 23.3%.
