Jennifer Balcarras and her daughter, Selah Reed, were found dead in a trail area in Bella Coola after a suspected grizzly bear attack in British Columbia. The BC Conservation Officer Service said evidence at the scene suggested an animal may have been involved, and officers are still tracking down any bears linked to the deaths.

Balcarras was 48 years old and Reed was 20. The women were reported missing on 1 November after they did not return from what was supposed to be a short afternoon walk. Balcarras had recently moved to Bella Coola to pursue a new career and begin a new chapter in her life.

Monday and Tuesday searches

Conservation officers and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police found Balcarras' remains on Monday and Reed's remains on Tuesday, both in the same search area. The step-by-step search matters here: the first recovery narrowed the search area, and the second tied both deaths to the same trail system rather than two separate locations.

Jeff Tyre said it was not yet clear if more than one was potentially involved in the women's deaths. He also said that if a bear is found to have been involved, it will be dispatched in accordance with provincial human-wildlife conflict response guidelines to protect public safety.

British Columbia bear response

British Columbia estimates between 10,000 and 13,000 grizzly bears, and the province's Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks classifies grizzly bears as vulnerable. Conflicts between bears and people are relatively rare unless animals are startled or protecting cubs and food, which is why investigators are focusing on what happened in the trail area rather than treating every bear sighting the same way.

Josh Balcarras described Jennifer Balcarras and Selah Reed as "two peas in a pod" who "got along really, really well". He also said, "When Jenny hiked, Selah was right there beside her," a detail that places the missing walk at the center of the family's loss.

Bella Coola public safety

The investigation now turns on one unresolved point: what bear or bears were responsible for the deaths. The BC Wildlife Federation has said reports of grizzly-human conflicts have risen since British Columbia introduced a ban on hunting grizzly bears for sport in 2017, and earlier incidents in the area show why officers will be treating any bear encounter cautiously.

In October 2025, a grizzly bear injured two hikers in the McGregor Mountain area, and one later died from critical injuries. The following month, a bear attacked a school group in the Bella Coola area and injured 11 people, leaving conservation officers with a clearer sequence to examine in this case as they work the same terrain for any bear involved.
