Ashley Jensen returns as Shetland Series 11 opens on a car dredged from the water and skeletal remains in the boot. The case is tied to a historic murder, and it pulls Tosh back into a work life already strained by Billy’s fallout.
The body belongs to an unknown male, but the car itself points straight to Dr Raymond Linden, a respected local GP who fled the isles 9 years ago. That gives the series a clean procedural engine: identify the victim, trace the vehicle, and follow the trail back to a disappearance that never settled.
Tosh, Calder and Raymond Linden
Tosh and Calder soon meet Linden’s mother Martha and brother Eric, and the family split sharpens the inquiry. Martha believes something terrible happened to Raymond, while Eric is not as convinced. Emily, Linden’s ex-wife, offers a very different recollection of her missing husband, and Calder and Tosh learn he was troubled and made Emily and their son Jonah’s life a living hell.
Sandy also meets Donald Pierce, who becomes unwittingly embroiled in the investigation. That widens the case beyond the family circle and gives the season room to move from private grief to wider suspicion without losing the original discovery that started it.
Alison O’Donnell and Billy
At the same time, Alison O’Donnell says Tosh’s side of the story is shaped by Billy’s bribe scandal from the end of the last series. Billy took Tosh’s advice and came clean, but she says the relationship is still under strain as season 11 begins. “I adore Lewis Howden,” she said, adding, “We've been on this journey for so many years now, and Tosh and Billy have a well-earned chemistry with one another, so it was really nice to have all of this to dive into.”
O’Donnell also said, “I can't imagine a world where they would really allow the rot to set in and give up on one another.” She went further: “However, events in season 11 are going to take them both right to the edge.”
Ashley Jensen’s recent TV lift shows how durable the wider cast has become for the, and this new run leans on that stability while pushing Tosh into a harder emotional lane. The immediate question is not whether the case gets bigger; it is whether the man in the boot is Raymond Linden, and whether Tosh and Billy can keep working through the damage that started last season.
