Brandon Aiyuk files for NFL reinstatement after 13-month hiatus — What Did Brandon Aiyuk Do

Brandon Aiyuk is filing for NFL reinstatement after a 13-month hiatus from the 49ers, setting up a complicated next step for both sides as the team works through what happens next.

The move comes after the 49ers placed Aiyuk on the reserve/left squad list last December. Since then, the wide receiver has been away from the club for 13 months, and the situation has only become more complicated as the calendar has moved toward Tuesday's deadline and Sunday's home game against the Raiders.

What the 49ers are doing

John Lynch said Thursday that the 49ers were working with the NFL Management Council and described the situation as fluid. He said the team would look for a pathway that works for both sides, and added that next week would be a better time to talk in more detail about the process.

That leaves several possible outcomes still on the table, including release, trade, or a request for a roster exemption or delayed ruling. For now, the organization appears to be navigating the reinstatement process without making a public commitment on which direction it will take.

Kyle Shanahan sounded far less focused on the situation. On Wednesday, after Christian Kirk sustained an unspecified knee injury in practice, Shanahan said he had no expectation of an Aiyuk reunion and that he had moved on mentally. He also said Friday's football schedule would center on a one-hour practice at 12:35 p.m., with no meeting planned between him and the team later that day.

How the players around him view it

The 49ers' receiver situation makes the timing notable. The group is dealing with injuries and absences, which only adds to the uncertainty around Aiyuk's status.

Some of Aiyuk's teammates left the door slightly open, even if they did not sound like they were expecting much. Trent Williams said he had not talked to Aiyuk but called him family. Brock Purdy said he loved what they did together when they played together and that, if he saw him, it would be nothing but love. George Kittle responded to a question about whether Aiyuk would get into the facility with a simple, “I plead the fifth.”

For now, the key question is not just what Brandon Aiyuk did, but what happens after the reinstatement filing. After a 13-month absence, the 49ers have to determine whether a return is realistic, what kind of roster move would follow, and whether the situation can be resolved before the season's next key deadline.
