Franz Wagner has made the mood clear ahead of Suns Vs Magic: the Orlando Magic need to keep their spirits high, clean up the execution and play with intensity for 48 minutes. That feels like the right starting point for a game that brings together two teams trying to get back on track on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET.

Orlando visit the Phoenix Suns on the opening leg of their first Western road trip of the season, with both sides carrying early-season concerns. The Magic are still dealing with injuries, turnovers and inconsistent 3-point shooting across their first seven games of the 2026-27 campaign, while Phoenix have opened 1-5 and are also searching for rhythm.

Why this matchup matters now

Wagner’s message is straightforward: the Magic cannot afford another slow start. He said the group needs to keep its spirits high and play an intense game for 48 minutes, while also cleaning up the offensive execution that has been an issue early in the season.

He added that the home start has not been where Orlando wanted it to be, which is why these games matter so much right now. The challenge is not just getting a result, but showing a more reliable version of the team that can limit mistakes and sustain pressure for the full game.

What Phoenix will bring

Desmond Bane expects the Suns to make life difficult from the opening tip. He described them as aggressive on both sides of the ball, saying they hunt threes and jump shots while also pressuring opponents defensively. He also pointed to their versatility, noting that they have switchable players and force teams to execute properly.

That creates an interesting contrast. The Suns are among the league leaders in assists and fewest turnovers, but they are also allowing 124.3 points per game. So, while Phoenix can move the ball and protect it, their defense has left plenty of openings.

Clean execution will decide it

Bane said it starts on the defensive side of the ball for Orlando, because that is what can create easier offense. He also called the road a good place for the group to come together, both on and off the court.

That fits the bigger picture for the Magic. They went 8-6 on the road against Western Conference opponents during the 2025-26 campaign, a winning record away from home that marked just the fourth time in franchise history they had done that. They also went 2-1 in their first action away from the Kia Center this season, so there is at least some evidence that they can handle this kind of trip.

The issue this time is consistency. Orlando need better ball security, sharper shooting and a full 48-minute effort if they want to leave Phoenix with a result. With both teams trying to recover from slow starts, Suns Vs Magic is less about style and more about which side can make the fewest mistakes when it matters most.
