This is not the kind of tweak a team makes because everything is humming along nicely. It is the kind of move that happens when the results are ugly, the scoring is thin and the coach decides enough is enough. With the Sharks having been outscored 24-11 over five of their last six games, Friday’s Sharks Vs Wild matchup comes with a lineup shuffle that says plenty about where this team is right now.

Michael Misa has been moved to the top line for the game against the Minnesota Wild, lining up with Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith after the trio were used together in the third period of Wednesday’s 7-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings and created a couple of scoring chances. Ryan Warsofsky has been rotating the left wing spot on Celebrini’s line since Igor Chernyshov’s injury, and this latest adjustment feels less like experimentation and more like a direct attempt to manufacture some offense.

Misa did not sound like a player rattled by the responsibility. He said he is comfortable there and that the focus is on supporting Celebrini and Smith while helping the Sharks create offense and find ways to score. That is the right attitude, because this team is not in a position to be precious about where talent sits in the lineup. The Sharks entered Friday tied for fifth in the Pacific Division, but a team that has lost five of six and is being beaten on the scoreboard that badly does not have the luxury of pretending the problem will sort itself out.

Askarov gets the start, and the pressure on the Sharks only grows

Yaroslav Askarov is also starting against the Wild, which adds another layer to a night that already feels important. When a team is trying to stop a skid, the lineup choices become part of the message. The Sharks are clearly trying to find a combination that gives them more energy, more structure and, above all, more goals.

Warsofsky, who signed a multi-year extension in September, made clear that the mood inside the room is not exactly serene. “We’re pretty aware of where we need to get to,” he said, before adding that everyone is frustrated trying to get to their game and battling to find it. That is the honest version, and it is probably the only version that matters right now. The Sharks are not dealing with a small dip. They are dealing with a stretch that has exposed how fragile the attack has become.

There are still moving parts here. Alexander Wennberg was injured on Oct. 19 against the Toronto Maple Leafs and could be activated off injured reserve for the game against the Dallas Stars on Saturday. Filip Bystedt was recalled from the Barracuda on Oct. 28. But those developments are secondary to the larger point: the Sharks are searching for any lineup that can kick-start them before this slide gets even more uncomfortable.

Against the Minnesota Wild, the changes are simple enough to read. Misa gets a bigger role. Askarov gets the crease. Warsofsky gets a chance to see whether a more aggressive look can pull the Sharks out of their recent mess. If it works, it will be because the coach finally found something that fits. If it does not, the questions around this lineup will only get louder.
