Tarleton State basketball heads to San Diego on Friday night for the first meeting between the programs, with tipoff set for 6:32 p.m. at Jenny Craig Pavilion.
The matchup gives Tarleton State its first regular-season road game of the year after opening with an 86-60 win over Division II Cameron in Eric Haut's debut. San Diego opened its season Monday with a 79-62 victory over Biola at home, so both teams enter the game at 1-0.
There is a little more context around Tarleton State than just the opener. The Texans moved up from Division II in 2020-21 and are now in their first season in the United Athletic Conference after six seasons in the WAC. That makes Friday's game another step in building the program's place at the Division I level, especially in a true road environment against a team it has never faced before.
What to watch
The early numbers from both openers offer a simple snapshot. Tarleton State scored 86 points against Cameron, while San Diego held Biola to 62. That does not settle much this early in the season, but it does suggest a game where early execution and pace could matter.
For San Diego, the homecourt setting is a plus in a first meeting that carries some novelty for both sides. For Tarleton State, it is another chance to build on a strong start under Haut and prove it can carry Monday's form into a more difficult setting.
San Diego vs. Tarleton State will be played Friday, Nov. 6 at 6:32 p.m. at Jenny Craig Pavilion.
