This was the sort of win that says plenty about Bayern Munich without exactly flattering them. They got the job done at Mainz, won 1-2, and stayed top of the Bundesliga on goal difference, but the title race is still balanced on a knife-edge. Borussia Dortmund also won, which means there is no breathing room and no chance to coast.
Harry Kane was central to it all, even without finding the net. He supplied two assists, first teeing up Joshua Kimmich in the 14th minute and later setting up Lennart Karl before the hour. That takes Kane to a league-high eight assists this season, a ridiculous return for a striker who had not scored in his previous three league games but still found a way to shape the result anyway.
Kane drove the result, not just the headline
Bayern started with purpose and took the lead early when Kimmich finished Kane's pass in the 14th minute. That mattered because it forced Mainz into the game and gave Bayern some control over the tempo. Yet this was never going to be a comfortable afternoon, and Mainz made sure of that by hanging around long enough to keep the pressure alive.
VAR then ruled out a Mainz equaliser from Lee Jae-sung for offside, and immediately after that Manuel Neuer was substituted because of injury. That sequence could have unsettled Bayern badly. Instead, they found their second goal before the hour through Lennart Karl, again with Kane providing the final touch in the move.
Mainz refused to disappear, though. In the added time, Phillip Tietz scored from Benedict Hollerbach's cross to make the closing stages nervy. But Bayern held on, and that is the important part: a win that keeps them level on 21 points with Borussia Dortmund and first on goal difference.
That is the real story here. Bayern did not need a masterpiece, just enough quality and enough resilience to keep their place at the summit. In a season where every small slip is being punished, this was a useful reminder that the title race is already being decided on tiny margins.
