The first loss always feels a little bigger when it comes in your first road test, and that was the case for UNI on Friday night in Brookings, S.D. South Dakota State, a red-hot Jackrabbits squad, beat the Panthers 76-54 and handed them their first defeat of the 2026-27 season.
The final score tells the basic story, but the game was decided well before the closing stretch. South Dakota State set the tone early, building a 12-4 lead at the first media timeout and taking a 22-15 advantage after the opening quarter. UNI hung around enough to keep the margin manageable at halftime, trailing 36-26, but the second half belonged to the home team, which outscored the Panthers 40-28.
Why the gap widened
That second-half number is the most revealing part of the night. UNI had chances to make the game tighter, but Tanya Warren said the Panthers did not take advantage of those moments. Her message afterward was direct: this is a young team learning how to win in pressure situations, and it has to learn from the mistakes that showed up when the gap was still within reach.
That is the kind of loss that can teach more than it frustrates, although it does not make the frustration disappear. UNI was unbeaten going into the trip, so there was always going to be a benchmark attached to this game. Against South Dakota State, the Panthers learned that competing for long stretches is not the same thing as closing against a team that can keep extending the margin.
What the numbers say
The box score reinforced that point. South Dakota State finished with a 50.9% field-goal mark and controlled the game enough to keep UNI from ever fully settling in. The Panthers still produced individual positives, led by a strong all-around outing from one player who finished with 18 points, 16 rebounds, three steals and three assists. It was the best single statistical line on the floor for UNI, even if it did not change the outcome.
That is the tension in a game like this: one standout performance can still exist inside a team result that was never really in doubt. UNI had enough resistance to avoid a complete collapse, but not enough offensive consistency or defensive stops to threaten a comeback once South Dakota State had settled in.
What comes next
The bigger question now is how quickly UNI turns the lesson into something useful. Warren sounded confident that the group will grow from the defeat, and that matters because the calendar does not slow down for first losses. The Panthers are scheduled to play the Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City, Iowa, on Thursday, November 12 at 7:30 p.m. CT.
For UNI, the challenge is simple to say and harder to execute: take the setback, keep the good pieces, and turn a difficult road night into a better response. The unbeaten start is gone, but the season is only beginning to reveal what this team can become.
