The Denver Nuggets and Indiana Pacers will meet in a regular-season game at Arena CDMX in Mexico City, adding another chapter to the NBA's long-running presence in Mexico.

The matchup will be the league's 35th NBA game in Mexico since the first one in 1992. It also fits into a broader push by the NBA to deepen its footprint in the country, where basketball has become a major part of the sports landscape.

Mexico remains a priority for the NBA

Raul Zarraga, the NBA's head of operations in Latin America and Canada, said Mexico is one of the league's top priorities. He also said the country is not part of the NBA's immediate franchise-expansion process.

That distinction matters. The league has been more aggressive about exploring expansion in other markets, with the NBA Board of Governors authorizing a formal study in March into Las Vegas and Seattle. Zarraga's comments, though, make clear that Mexico is being viewed through a different lens for now.

His point is that Mexico already has several pieces in place that make it attractive for the NBA: infrastructure, audience, business activity and momentum. The league has also spent years building that connection through youth programs, coaching initiatives, NBA House fan events and localized content.

The scale of the audience helps explain why. Mexico has 30 million NBA fans, and last season 21.6 million unique fans in the country watched live NBA game broadcasts through streaming platforms. The league also said there are 8 million users and 200 million engagements per year tied to its digital presence there.

The Mexico City game is part of that wider strategy, giving local fans a chance to see two NBA teams in person while reinforcing how important the market has become. For the NBA, it is another visible step in a relationship that has grown steadily since 1992.

For the Pacers and Nuggets, the trip is straightforward on the surface: a regular-season game in a different arena and a different market. For the league, it is something bigger. It is another reminder that Mexico is no longer just an occasional stop for the NBA. It is one of the places the league sees as central to its future growth.
