The Seattle Sounders head into Decision Day knowing Saturday’s meeting with LAFC could be their last match of the season. Brian Schmetzer’s side need a win, and they also need results elsewhere to go their way if they are to reach at least the play-in game.
That makes the final day of the regular season simple in one sense and complicated in another. Seattle must handle its own business at Lumen Field against LAFC, but what happens beyond that will also shape whether the season ends on Saturday or carries on for at least one more game.
Schmetzer adds another layer to the preparation
After last weekend’s 5-1 loss on the road to the Vancouver Whitecaps, Schmetzer and his coaching staff adjusted the work on the training ground early in the week. By Friday morning, the Sounders had completed their final session at Lumen Field with the focus firmly on Saturday’s must-win match.
Schmetzer said the club did not set out to change everything, but did want to sharpen what was already in place. “We’re not changing the whole way we operate, we just wanted to add to it,” he said. He described the extra work as “another component, trying to think outside of the box, cover all the bases.”
That approach fits the situation. Seattle are not chasing a full reset in one week. They are looking for enough detail, discipline and belief to keep their season alive.
Roldan says the group has responded
Cristian Roldan said the Sounders increased the intensity in training and used the week to confront the challenge head-on. “This week we trained harder, we were all about duels and intensity,” he said. “We’ve challenged ourselves.”
Roldan added that the squad had spent time in meetings and felt the response had been positive from top to bottom. “I think everybody’s pushing, and at the end of the day we’re all pushing in the right direction and in the same direction,” he said. The message from the players is clear: there is no room for drift now.
Schmetzer framed the pressure in equally direct terms. “It’s not just my expectations that they have to meet. It’s actually their expectations... and if it’s not going well, I’m going to say, ‘look, you guys, this is what you guys committed to’, and if you’re not doing it well, then the next guy’s going to step on the field and he’s going to do it.”
Defending the danger moments
The biggest tactical concern is obvious. Schmetzer summed it up with one warning: “Just don’t concede to a Bouanga-Son transition moment.”
That is where this match could be decided. If Seattle lose structure when the game opens up, LAFC have enough threat to punish them quickly. Roldan said the Sounders must “focus on ourselves” and “do everything to defend well against a strong side,” while also recognising that LAFC will have their own motivation to win.
Seattle’s challenge is not only about avoiding another bad result. It is about showing enough control, enough resilience and enough edge to turn a difficult week into a surviving one. If they do that, they will at least give themselves a chance to keep the season going. If they do not, Saturday could be the end.
