The general table Liga MX has reached the kind of pressure point that usually defines the final stretch of a season. After 15 completed dates of the Apertura 2026, América, Cruz Azul and Chivas were all tied on 29 points, with goal difference separating the leading teams and Jornada 16 already set up to reshape the picture.
On 7 November, the penultimate round began with the table still finely balanced. That matters because four places for the Liguilla remain to be decided, and the top of the standings is compressed enough that the lead can change more than once in a single day.
América, Cruz Azul and Chivas are all in the title conversation
For now, América are the side officially sitting in first place, but they do not have any clear breathing room. Cruz Azul and Chivas are level with them on 29 points, which means the margin at the top is tiny and the standings can shift quickly as the full Jornada 16 slate plays out.
That is exactly why this stage of the Apertura has become so compelling. A team can go into the day on top and still finish it somewhere else entirely, depending on results elsewhere and on the fine detail of goal difference.
The Clásico Capitalino adds another layer
One of the key games in Jornada 16 is the Clásico Capitalino between Pumas and América. In a round like this, that kind of fixture carries even more weight because it involves one of the teams fighting for the lead and a result that could ripple through the entire general table Liga MX race.
There is also movement just behind the frontrunners. Necaxa beat Tijuana before the full round was completed, while Santos beat Atlante at Estadio Banorte and moved momentarily into fifth position. Those results underline how crowded the table remains, not just at the top but in the fight for the Liguilla places as well.
Atlas can still break into the summit picture
Hernán Crespo’s Atlas are also still in the frame. They sit fourth with 27 points and can still reach the top of the table if results go their way, which is another reminder that the race is not limited to the three teams currently tied on 29.
With Jornada 17 still to come after this, the next two rounds will decide far more than pride. The standings are tight enough that every point now has real weight, and the general table Liga MX may look very different by the end of the day.
