The shootings unfolded during Winston-Salem State’s annual homecoming celebration, a weekend that also included a football matchup against Fayetteville State University at Bowman Gray Stadium. Police have not released the identity of the person who died.

Police also have not indicated whether any of the victims were students at Winston-Salem State, and additional details about where the shootings happened on campus have not been released. The conditions of the three surviving victims also have not been publicly disclosed.

Police have not said what led to the violence, whether the two incidents were connected, or whether any suspects have been identified or arrested. That leaves the investigation centered on a basic question for the campus community: how two shootings began during the same homecoming weekend and whether they were part of one sequence or separate events.
