There are referee appointments that barely register, and then there are the ones that immediately add another layer to an already charged fixture. Felix Zwayer falls into the second category for 1. FC Köln against Bayer 04 Leverkusen, because Sunday’s Nachbarschaftsduell comes with a familiar name and a long enough history to make the assignment feel meaningful before the first whistle.

Zwayer will take charge of the Bundesliga meeting between Köln and the Werkself for the fifth time in a derby context. The record is mixed, but not dramatically so. Köln have won two of the four previous derby matches he has overseen, drawn one and lost one, which is why the appointment does not automatically lean one way or the other. It does, however, underline how often Zwayer has already been part of this particular rivalry.

A referee with a derby file on both clubs

The first of those meetings came in November 2015, when Köln won 2:1 in the BayArena. That was followed by October 2021, when Köln recovered from 0:2 down to draw 2:2 with Leverkusen. In May 2023, Zwayer again handled the derby in the BayArena, and Köln came away with a 2:1 win. The most recent league derby, in October 2023, ended differently, with Köln losing 0:3 in Leverkusen.

That is part of what makes the appointment noteworthy: Zwayer has already seen both the emotional and tactical extremes of this matchup. It has produced comeback football, narrow margins and a one-sided defeat, all under the same referee. For Köln, that experience matters because this is a difficult and important task, even before any discussion of officiating enters the picture.

Zwayer’s Köln record is not limited to the derby, either. In May 2021, he officiated Köln’s match against Kiel, a 0:1 defeat that still carries a sharper memory because of the disallowed Jonas Hector goal and the absence of a red card after a foul on Ondrej Duda. That episode remains the clearest reminder that his name can still stir debate in Köln circles.

At the same time, the broader numbers are not especially hostile to either club. Zwayer has taken charge of 32 matches involving Köln, with five defeats. The same general pattern applies to Leverkusen, who have 20 wins, nine draws and 11 defeats in the 40 matches he has overseen for them. In other words, both clubs can point to mostly positive returns when Zwayer is in charge, even if individual matches have occasionally left a sharper imprint than the raw record suggests.

For Köln, the immediate question is not whether Zwayer’s appointment decides the derby. It is whether they can turn a difficult assignment into another competitive performance against Leverkusen. The referee will not be the main story if the game is decided cleanly, but his presence ensures that the backdrop is already familiar: a rivalry with history, a few unresolved memories and two teams that have generally done enough under him to keep the appointment from feeling like a bad omen.
