Jack McCaffery has taken an indefinite medical leave from the University of Richmond basketball team after being diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. He was evaluated by Richmond's medical staff earlier this week before traveling home with his parents.
After returning home, he was admitted to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and has begun treatment. He will remain hospitalized under the care of doctors and nurses at Penn Medicine.
Fran McCaffery statement
Fran McCaffery thanked Richmond's coaching and medical staff for their response. He said, "We are grateful to the Richmond coaching staff and medical team for their prompt response, and to Kevin Mahoney and the doctors and nurses here at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania."
He also said, "He is in great hands and our family feels blessed to be here, where Jack's care is directed by this world-class care team."
Jack McCaffery return
Jack's return to basketball has no timeline. That leaves his absence open-ended while treatment continues, with his care centered at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Fran McCaffery is the son of former Iowa men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery. Hodgkin lymphoma is a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system, which is part of the body's immune system.
