Devin Singletary may be in line to start for the Giants against the Eagles on Sunday after a wave of injuries left the backfield badly depleted.
The Giants entered the week with just one healthy option in the running back room, a dramatic change from earlier in the season when Singletary was fourth on the depth chart and even spent Weeks 3-5 as a healthy scratch. If he starts against the Eagles, it would be his first start since Week 2 of 2025.
Singletary’s path back into a larger role has been shaped by how quickly the room unraveled. Najee Harris was released on Oct. 20, Tyrone Tracy Jr. hurt his hamstring in the following game against Houston, and Cam Skattebo also left that game with a hamstring injury after handling 17 carries for 124 yards and a score. Skattebo then practiced only in a limited capacity on Friday before Sunday’s game and was listed as doubtful.
Singletary says he is ready
Singletary has not hidden his mindset through the ups and downs. He said he knows what he can do and wants to display that when the chance comes. He also said he stayed positive through the uncertain stretch because that is who he is.
That attitude has already shown up in flashes. In Week 6, when he returned against the Saints, Singletary had four carries for 18 yards and a 19-yard reception. A week later, he delivered a much bigger moment, scoring a 30-yard overtime game-winning touchdown run against the Texans.
That is part of what makes his possible Week 9 start interesting for the Giants. Singletary is 29 years old, has been through a deep backfield before, and said this is simply part of the game. He described the situation as competition in a deep room and noted that when an opportunity arrives, a player has to be ready rather than frustrated or disappointed by the way things unfolded.
For the Giants, the immediate question is simple: who can handle the load against the Eagles if the running back room remains thin? For Singletary, the answer could be another chance to prove he is still capable of making an impact when the opportunity is there.
