Lech Poznań go into Sunday’s match against Zagłębie Lubin with the sort of momentum that changes the tone of a title race. Five straight league wins, 20 goals in that run and first place in Ekstraklasa make this another important test of whether Niels Frederiksen’s side can keep control at the top.
The numbers are straightforward enough. Lech have 31 points after 12 matches and lead Górnik Zabrze by three points, while also owning the most productive attack in the division with 32 league goals. At home, they have been especially strong, winning six of seven league matches in Poznań, and that makes the league leaders the clear benchmark in this fixture.
Lech’s form has set the standard
The most encouraging part of Lech’s run is not just the results, but the consistency behind them. Winning five consecutive league matches is difficult enough in any competition, yet Lech have done it while scoring freely and managing a schedule that is now into a ninth game in less than a month.
That congestion matters because Lech were also beaten 1:3 by Benfica on Thursday before this Sunday fixture. Even so, the league picture has not changed: they remain top, they remain in control, and they still look like the side everyone else must chase.
Zagłębie’s challenge is to stay in the game
Zagłębie Lubin arrive in sixth place, which means they are not carrying the same pressure as the leaders, but they do have to cope with a mixed recent league run and a limited away record. They have won once away, drawn three times and lost twice, so the trip to Poznań is a demanding one on paper as well as on the table.
There is some encouragement for Zagłębie in the fact that they beat Korona Kielce 1:0 in the previous league round. But they also know they are facing the division’s most productive attack, and history suggests this is rarely a quiet fixture.
Goals have usually been part of this meeting
The recent head-to-head record points towards action. In the ten most recent meetings between Lech Poznań and Zagłębie Lubin, at least one goal was scored every time, and in seven of those ten games both teams found the net.
That does not guarantee a repeat on Sunday, but it does underline the basic picture: Lech tend to bring control and attacking weight, while Zagłębie have usually found a way to make the contest competitive enough to produce chances at both ends.
Both clubs were also eliminated from the Polish Cup by Siarka Tarnobrzeg, which adds another small layer of irritation to the build-up. But the real focus remains the league table. Lech are trying to protect first place, and with their form, home record and scoring power, they will feel this is a match they should be able to manage. The question for Zagłębie is whether they can disrupt that rhythm long enough to make the leaders uncomfortable.
