Linda Noskova made the ideal start to Group 1 play at the FAGE WTA Finals in Indian Wells, beating Marta Kostyuk 6-2, 6-4 to set the early pace in the section. It was a clean straight-sets win that also extended Noskova's season edge over Kostyuk to three straight victories.

The result mattered because it came in the opening match of the group and immediately shaped the standings. Noskova arrived in Indian Wells as the No. 8-ranked player and a WTA Finals debutant, while Kostyuk entered as an alternate after Elena Rybakina withdrew with a viral illness on Saturday.

Noskova had the sharper start

This was a contest between two players who already knew plenty about each other. Noskova and Kostyuk had met on clay, grass and hard courts earlier in the season, and Noskova had already won three of their four meetings. On Sunday, that familiarity showed in the way she handled the first set.

Noskova took control quickly and never really let the match drift. The 6-2 opening set gave her command, and while Kostyuk tried to settle into the contest, Noskova stayed the steadier player at the important moments.

Kostyuk's path into the draw made the task even harder

Kostyuk's place in the field was only confirmed on Saturday, after Rybakina's withdrawal. That left her with little time to prepare for a WTA Finals environment that already comes with enough pressure on its own.

There was also the shadow of recent history. Kostyuk had missed the Billie Jean King Cup final for Czechia in September because of a right wrist injury, while Noskova's own season had already been full of major moments after reaching the Top 10 in June, winning Wimbledon in July and clinching the Billie Jean King Cup for Czechia in September.

By the end, the scoreline reflected the difference in control. Noskova was sharper from the start, more secure through the key games, and she left Group 1 looking like a player ready to make her mark at Indian Wells.
