Rays to Build New Stadium by 2029

The Tampa Bay Rays are planning to unveil a new stadium by the start of the 2029 season. This announcement was made by Patrick Zalupski, the team’s new majority owner, during a press conference held on Tuesday. He emphasized the importance of having a “world-class ballpark” ready in time, describing the timeline as “aggressive and perhaps audacious.”

Development Plans for the New Stadium

The proposed fixed-roof stadium will be at the center of a large mixed-use development, expected to cover at least 100 acres. This ambitious project will likely include:

  • Hotels
  • Office spaces
  • Retail shops
  • Restaurants and bars
  • A music venue

Zalupski stated that the new home for the Rays is essential to ensure the team’s long-term presence in Tampa Bay, reinforcing the notion that time is critical for these developments.

Economic Impact and Community Commitment

Along with the construction of the new stadium, Zalupski pledged to focus on creating a championship-caliber team. He believes the new development will generate the necessary revenue for sustainable success over the long term. The new stadium is expected to create jobs and foster economic growth, ensuring opportunities for the community for generations to come.

Site Evaluation and Future Options

After the sale’s completion on September 30, the new ownership group is moving forward with site evaluations. An area of at least 100 acres limits available locations within the Tampa Bay area. One potential site includes the Hillsborough Community College Dale Mabry campus, which is situated on 108 acres near notable venues like Raymond James Stadium.

Previously, ARK Investment Management and partners revealed a $6.8 billion plan for a new development that could align with Rays’ ambitions for their upcoming stadium. Ken Babby, the Rays CEO, remarked that the team is enthusiastic about any regional development initiatives that may align with their goals.

Focus on Fan Experience and Team Success

Both Zalupski and Babby stressed their commitment to provide an exceptional experience for fans. They are prioritizing business operations and community engagement while delegating on-field decisions to Erik Neander and manager Kevin Cash.

Babby shared his fond memories of St. Petersburg, referencing his family connections with the Orioles. He acknowledged the efforts of local officials, including Mayor Ken Welch, in preparing Tropicana Field for the upcoming seasons.

Upgrades to Tropicana Field

As discussions about the future continue, the ownership intends to enhance Tropicana Field. Planned improvements include:

  • New video boards
  • Upgraded sound systems
  • Unique fan experiences

Babby indicated that Tropicana Field will see significant enhancements before the focus fully shifts to the new stadium in 2029. However, he noted it was too early to discuss extending the current lease, which expires after the 2028 season.

The ownership group acknowledges the foundational work done by former owner Stuart Sternberg and is committed to maintaining the franchise’s reputation for innovation and success as they move forward with these ambitious plans for the new stadium by 2029.
