Vodafone Idea’s AI Blocks Over 600 Million Spam and Scam Calls in 2025

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has unveiled a new initiative called “Vi Protect,” aiming to enhance consumer safety while addressing the growing concerns around spam and scam calls in India. The announcement was made at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2025, where the telecom operator highlighted its commitment to security and user protection.
AI-Powered Solutions for Spam Detection
Under the Vi Protect umbrella, Vodafone Idea has introduced an innovative AI-based “Voice Spam Detection” system. This technology identifies fraudulent calls in real time. By utilizing advanced AI models and user feedback, Vi can flag suspicious callers before they reach customers.
When a potential spam number calls, customers will see a “Suspected Spam” alert on their screens. This feature allows users to make informed decisions about answering calls. Vi Protect aligns with similar offerings from competitors, such as Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, without requiring any third-party applications.
Extensive Spam and Scam Call Mitigation
Since its implementation, Vi’s systems have successfully identified over 600 million spam and scam calls and messages. This achievement underscores Vi’s ongoing effort to safeguard millions of customers from fraud and data theft.
Enhanced Cyber Defense Measures
In addition to call screening, Vi Protect encompasses a comprehensive cyber defense system. This utilizes agentic and generative AI models to detect and address potential cyber threats within an hour, significantly improving response times. The system boasts nearly 70% accuracy, reducing false positives considerably.
Future Developments and Additional Offerings
Vi is set to introduce a real-time URL protection solution soon. This tool will scan and block suspicious links, further preventing phishing and malware attacks. Expanding beyond consumer protection, Vi plans to offer this capability to its enterprise customers, providing predictive insights based on global cyber events.
Jagbir Singh, Chief Technology Officer at Vi, expressed the telecom operator’s commitment, stating, “Vi Protect uses advanced AI and proactive measures to protect our customers and strengthen our networks.” The initiative aims to foster a safe and trustworthy digital environment for all users.
