AST SpaceMobile & Verizon Finalize Deal for Nationwide Space-Based Cellular Broadband

AST SpaceMobile has partnered with Verizon to advance space-based cellular broadband capabilities. The definitive commercial agreement was announced recently and will take effect in 2026. This initiative aims to address connectivity challenges across the continental United States.
Key Details of the Agreement
The collaboration between AST SpaceMobile and Verizon will utilize a unique combination of technology. AST SpaceMobile is developing a network that operates directly with standard smartphones. This network will enhance Verizon’s existing infrastructure, ensuring customers can remain connected in various locations.
Technical Innovations
- Utilizes multi-operator 850 MHz cellular spectrum.
- Features the largest commercial communications arrays deployed in low Earth orbit.
- Allow direct connection to ordinary smartphones, eliminating the need for special devices.
Abel Avellan, the Founder, Chairman, and CEO of AST SpaceMobile, emphasized the significance of this agreement, stating, “We are working to deliver space-based cellular broadband coverage from space.” This will extend Verizon’s 850 MHz premium low-band spectrum further into underserved areas.
Successful Tests and Trials
The agreement follows successful testing of the AST SpaceMobile network. Recent trials demonstrated effective voice and video calls, and two-way messaging between standard smartphones and a satellite. These tests show a significant advancement in satellite-to-cellular technology.
In one trial, a customer in Texas made a seamless Voice over LTE (VoLTE) call to another customer in New Jersey via the AST SpaceMobile satellite. This achievement marks a crucial milestone in enhancing connectivity.
Future Outlook
Verizon’s Senior Vice President of Technology and Product Development, Srini Kalapala, described this partnership as a step toward creating “a seamlessly connected world.” Integrating terrestrial and space-based technology aims to transform global connectivity, enabling access regardless of location.
