Victor Wembanyama’s Return: Kung Fu, Meditation, and “Dream Shake” Revealed

Victor Wembanyama has embarked on a transformative journey this summer, combining unconventional training with valuable mentorship. The San Antonio Spurs star, at just 21 years old, sought to enhance his game under the guidance of Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon at a renowned big man camp in Texas.
Training with Basketball Legends
Wembanyama, known for his extraordinary talent, met Olajuwon during the NCAA men’s basketball national championship game in April. Olajuwon, a two-time NBA champion and MVP, welcomed the opportunity to mentor Wembanyama. Their goal: to refine Wembanyama’s skills and share secrets behind the iconic “Dream Shake.” This training set the stage for Wembanyama’s impressive summer.
Overcoming Adversity
Earlier this year, Wembanyama faced a significant health scare. He was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. This experience profoundly impacted him, motivating him to pursue mental and physical growth. “The traumatic experience is very much linked to all the stuff I’ve done in the summer,” he reflected.
Unique Training Experiences
Wembanyama’s training regimen was anything but typical. He engaged in various activities, including:
- 10 days at a Shaolin temple in Zhengzhou, China, training in Kung Fu and practicing Chan meditation.
- Soccer practice in Costa Rica and Tokyo, demonstrating his versatility.
- Hosting a chess and basketball tournament in Le Chesnay, France to foster community.
- Visiting NASA’s Johnson Space Center, learning from astronaut Peggy Whitson.
His time in China was especially transformative, as he aimed to enhance his range of motion and strength. “It was an incredible experience,” Wembanyama noted, emphasizing its impact on both his training and personal growth.
Engaging with Fans
As the Spurs training camp approached, Wembanyama showed his commitment to San Antonio by hosting fan events. On September 14, he judged tryouts for dedicated supporters, engaging with fans through chants and interactions. His enthusiasm created a thrilling atmosphere, reminiscent of passionate soccer environments.
Ready for the Season
With the NBA season just around the corner, the Spurs have elevated expectations. Wembanyama’s growth and unique training experiences leave fans and teammates hopeful. “You see how hard he works and how motivated he is,” said teammate Jeremy Sochan. Wembanyama himself stated, “I can assure you nobody has trained like I did this summer.”
By blending innovative training methods and engaging with the community, Victor Wembanyama is poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming NBA season.
