Rubery Couple Credits Lasting Marriage to True Love
Raymond Powell and Joan Powell, a couple from Rubery, are celebrating 75 years of marriage. They attribute their enduring relationship to the vital principle of “marrying the one you love.” This belief has guided them through the many challenges they have faced together.
Commitment to True Love
The Powells first met in their late teens on a work trip to London. This trip, which included a visit to the Palladium to see Betty Hutton, marked the beginning of their love story. From that moment, Raymond, who was born in Nechells, felt a strong attraction to Joan.
Joan, a native of Winson Green, shared how their connection grew. “Ray used to come and see me at work every day,” she recalled. He would bring her a rose weekly, a charming gesture that deepened their bond.
Wedding and Honeymoon
On 7 October 1950, Raymond and Joan exchanged vows at St Laurence’s Church in Northfield. The wedding day was memorable, though simple due to post-war rationing. They could only afford a four-day honeymoon in Banbury, their first step into married life.
Building a Family
The couple has built a loving family over the years, having two children, Lynne and Michael. They are also proud grandparents to three grandchildren, with a third great-grandchild on the way. Their family continues to grow, creating a remarkable legacy for future generations.
Lasting Love Through Trials
Reflecting on their marriage, Joan said, “We’ve been through some traumatic times together but we’ve always come out smiling.” Their journey exemplifies the strength of true love and commitment in overcoming life’s challenges.
