Dodgers Deliver Worrying Update on Tommy Edman’s Injury

The Los Angeles Dodgers are currently addressing concerns regarding utility player Tommy Edman’s ongoing ankle issues. Manager Dave Roberts provided an update on Edman’s condition, which has kept him sidelined for three of the last four regular-season games and the second game of the Wild Card series.

Update on Edman’s Injury

According to Roberts, Edman’s ankle is stable but has not shown significant improvement. “I think it’s holding up. Not getting any worse. Not getting much better,” he said. The manager believes that allowing Edman to take a few at-bats each night offers some benefits while monitoring his condition throughout the game.

Performance in the NLDS

Despite his injury, Edman played in Game 1 of the National League Division Series (NLDS), where he recorded one hit in four at-bats. This is not the first bout with ankle trouble for Edman this season. He started the year hitting .252 with an OPS of .818 across 30 games and contributed eight home runs and 24 runs batted in.

History of Injuries

Edman was placed on the injured list due to ankle inflammation at the beginning of May and missed around two weeks. On returning, his performance dipped, as he averaged only .212 with an OPS of .596 over the next 56 games. Subsequently, he suffered a sprained ankle, leading to another extended stint on the injured list, this time exceeding a month.

  • April-May 2023: Ankle inflammation sidelined Edman for approximately two weeks.
  • Returned hitting .212 with an OPS of .596 over 56 games.
  • Re-injured ankle, placed back on the injured list for over a month.

Before entering the postseason, Edman was struggling, hitting .209 in his last 11 games. Dodgers president of baseball operations, Andrew Friedman, noted that Edman aggravated the injury during an outfield play last week. He emphasized that limiting movement is crucial for Edman’s recovery.

“He’ll do whatever. But I think the best chance for us to keep him growing strong right now is to limit the amount of movement in the outfield,” Friedman stated. As a result, Edman has transitioned back to infield duties, showing resilience and determination to contribute in the NLDS.
