Tulane University Athletics has announced that Alyssa Dismuke and Zander Dunbar are the 2025 Stephen Martin Scholars. This scholarship program honors Stephen Martin, who was a trailblazer in the Southeastern Conference, breaking racial barriers when he played baseball for Tulane in 1965. The Stephen Martin Scholars are recognized for their exceptional character, leadership skills, academic diligence, and civic engagement.

Alyssa Dismuke’s Accomplishments

Alyssa Dismuke, a senior from Bastrop, Louisiana, represents the ideal qualities of a Stephen Martin Scholar. She is majoring in Political Science and competes as a thrower on Tulane’s Track and Field team.

  • President of emPOWERed, focusing on student-athlete initiatives.
  • Culture and Relations Chair for the SAAC executive board.
  • Coordinator for Leadership Engagement on the American SAAC executive board.

Dismuke actively participates in community service projects, including MLK Day and holiday gift drives. Additionally, she interned with the Center for Public Service and helped facilitate workshops aimed at enhancing leadership skills.

Zander Dunbar’s Contributions

Zander Dunbar, also a senior, hails from New Orleans. He is a double major in Political Science and Sociology and is recognized as a Posse Foundation Scholar.

  • Won the 800 meters at the 2024 American Outdoor Championships.
  • Set the school’s indoor 800-meter record at 1:50.38.
  • Served as Men’s Track & Field representative for SAAC.

Beyond athletics, Dunbar contributes significantly to the New Orleans community. He mentors youth through the organization Son of a Saint and is a coach for Live Oak, focusing on youth leadership development. Dunbar is also actively involved in campus service events, contributing to numerous charitable efforts.

Recognition Ceremony and Legacy

Dismuke and Dunbar will receive their honors during Tulane’s football game against East Carolina at Yulman Stadium. The two expressed their gratitude, stating that being named Stephen Martin Scholars is a tremendous honor. They acknowledge the inspiring legacy of Stephen Martin, which extends beyond Tulane to impact the entire New Orleans community.

About Stephen Martin

Born on November 2, 1946, Stephen Martin was a member of the Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity and graduated with a degree in Latin from Tulane in 1968. He later earned a master’s degree in business administration from Tulane in 1973. Martin served in the United States Army and retired as CFO of Tuskegee University in 2012. He and his wife, Brigid Cheri Martin, who also graduated from Tulane, had three children.
