Spain Braces for Severe Rain, Storms, and Local Flash Flooding

Spain is preparing for severe weather as the country braces for heavy rainfall and storms. Popular tourist destinations, including Benidorm, Alicante, and Ibiza, are under yellow and amber weather warnings.

Weather Warnings in Affected Regions

The national meteorological agency, Aemet, has issued yellow warnings for various regions in the southeast of Spain. This includes:

  • Benidorm
  • Alicante
  • Valencia

Amber warnings are in effect for Ibiza and Formentera in the Balearic Islands, with forecasts predicting up to 100mm of rain within just four hours.

Impact of the Severe Weather

Forecasts indicate “very heavy and persistent rains” starting from late October 8 and continuing through at least October 12. Aemet anticipates that the eastern regions, particularly around Cabo de la Nao, will experience the highest rainfall accumulations.

This weather situation may lead to local flash flooding in vulnerable areas, including low-lying regions, streams, and gullies. The forecasters have categorized the potential danger level as high.

Expected Rainfall and Thunderstorms

On October 9, initial showers are expected in eastern Castilla-La Mancha and inland areas of the Valencian Community. These will likely extend to coastal areas of Catalonia and the Valencian Community. Over the day, showers are predicted to impact Ibiza, Formentera, Murcia, and the eastern part of Andalusia.

These rain events may be accompanied by thunderstorms, particularly intense around Cabo de la Nao. By October 10, rainfall will likely be confined to the southeast of the peninsula, though it may still affect the Alboran Sea and the Balearic Islands.

Advice for Residents and Tourists

Due to the unpredictable conditions, residents and visitors are advised to monitor local weather forecasts closely. The situation is expected to remain unstable as the weekend approaches.
