Oklahoma’s QB John Mateer Cleared for Red River Rivalry

Oklahoma’s quarterback, John Mateer, has received a positive update regarding his status for the upcoming Red River Rivalry against Texas. According to the SEC Availability Report issued on Thursday evening, Mateer is now considered probable for the game. Previously, he was listed as questionable after sustaining a right hand injury during the Sooners’ match against Auburn on September 20.

During the game against Auburn, Mateer played through pain and contributed to a 24-17 victory. Just four days post-injury, he underwent surgery in Los Angeles, causing him to miss Oklahoma’s subsequent game against Kent State on October 4. In his absence, Michael Hawkins Jr. took over as the starting quarterback.

Impact on the Sooners

Mateer’s potential return is significant for the Sooners as they prepare to face their fierce rival, Texas. Before his injury, Mateer had impressive statistics, throwing for 1,215 yards along with six touchdowns and three interceptions. He also added 190 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns this season. His strong performance made him a favorite for the Heisman Trophy, with odds of plus-750 according to ESPN BET Sportsbook.

Backup Quarterback Performance

  • Michael Hawkins Jr. started against Kent State, throwing for 162 yards.
  • He completed 14 of 24 passes, including three touchdowns.
  • This was Hawkins’ second game appearance this year, following a brief stint in a win against Temple.
  • In his freshman year, Hawkins recorded 783 passing yards and four total touchdowns.

If Mateer cannot participate, Hawkins will lead the Sooners against the Longhorns once again. Meanwhile, wide receiver Keontez Lewis is also doubtful for Saturday’s game after sustaining an injury during the Kent State match. Lewis was transported to a local hospital after colliding with a wall, having previously caught 17 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns this season.

Injury Report

Oklahoma lists several players as unavailable for the Texas game:

  • Offensive linemen Troy Everett, Jacob Sexton, and Jake Taylor
  • Tight end Kade McIntyre

Everett will miss the remainder of the season due to a knee injury, while coach Brent Venables indicated that Sexton might return later in the season. Logan Howland remains doubtful but has played in every game so far.

An updated availability report will be released on Friday, with the final status report due 90 minutes before the game on Saturday.
