Griz Celebrate Homecoming with Nostalgic Flair

Montana’s Grizzlies will celebrate Homecoming Saturday in nostalgic style, unveiling their throwback uniforms at Washington-Grizzly Stadium. This year marks a significant occasion as it commemorates the 30th anniversary of the program’s first National Championship in 1995.

Throwback Uniforms Highlight Unique History

The new uniforms incorporate copper and gold hues, a nostalgic tribute to the team’s heritage. For the first time, the helmet displays “Otto the slobbering bear,” a logo that originated in the 1970s. This logo was once prominently featured at Dahlberg Arena until the school reverted to maroon and silver as its primary colors in 1996.

Historical Significance of Uniform Colors

The Grizzlies first debuted the copper, silver, and gold uniforms in 1967, introduced by coach Jack Swarthout. He aimed to honor Montana’s mining legacy, particularly in Butte. The team has sported these throwback designs on three occasions prior to this year.

  • 2018: Celebrated Dave Dickenson’s Hall of Fame induction.
  • 2015: Marked the 20th anniversary of the 1995 National Championship team.
  • 2008: Surprised fans in the Montana/Montana State rivalry game.

Availability of Throwback Apparel

Fans can purchase apparel from the new vintage line through various retailers. Options include:

  • Go Griz Store, on-campus
  • Scheels and Dillard’s, Southgate Mall
  • M Store and Wear Your Roots, downtown Missoula
  • Grizzly Team Store
  • UpTop Clothing, online

High demand has led to limited inventory, but restocking is expected in the coming weeks. As the Grizzlies prepare for a game day filled with history and nostalgia, fans eagerly anticipate this celebration of their team’s rich past.
