Water Jet Trains Combat Leaf Buildup in Sussex and Kent

A specialized fleet of trains has been introduced to address leaf buildup on railway tracks in Kent and East Sussex. These water jet trains, operated by Southeastern, will operate continuously from the Tonbridge depot. The initiative aims to reduce delays caused by fallen leaves during the autumn season.

Innovative Solutions to Keep Trains Running

Along with the water jet trains, Southeastern is trialing new ‘Sand Rover’ 4×4 vehicles. These vehicles are designed to treat tracks, enhancing grip for trains in slippery conditions. This trial will take place on two specific lines to evaluate their effectiveness.

Preparing for Autumn Challenges

As the autumn timetable takes effect starting Sunday, Southeastern is anticipating a challenging season. Approximately 50 million leaves are forecasted to fall on tracks in southeast England this autumn. This poses significant operational challenges, particularly in ensuring safety and maintaining schedules.

Timetable Adjustments and Customer Communication

  • Autumn timetable in place until December 13.
  • Some train services may slightly adjust their departure times.
  • Customers are encouraged to check updated timetables in advance.

David Davidson, Southeastern’s Chief Operating Officer, addressed the issue, highlighting the potential risks posed by leaf fall. He emphasized that these operational adjustments aim to keep trains running safely and efficiently, even during peak leaf fall periods.

Commitment to Enhanced Service

Southeastern is committed to minimizing disruptions and maintaining confidence among its passengers. The introduction of these innovative measures reflects their dedication to improving rail service during a season marked by natural challenges.
