The remnants of Typhoon Halong have resulted in severe flooding across western Alaska, causing catastrophic damage and displacing residents. Reports indicate that entire homes were swept from their foundations as hurricane-force winds struck coastal communities.

On a recent Sunday, the villages of Kipnuk and Kwigillingok were significantly affected, with local authorities estimating that as many as 20 individuals might be unaccounted for. Jeremy Zidek, a spokesperson from the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, confirmed that homes had literally floated away during the storm.

Disaster Response and Rescue Efforts

In Kipnuk, over 170 residents sought shelter overnight due to rising water, which rose 6.6 feet above normal tides. At least eight homes were reported lost. Roads, boardwalks, and power lines in nearby areas, including Bethel and Napaskiak, suffered significant damage as a result of the flooding.

Western Alaska is characterized by its isolation, with many communities lacking proper road access. Residents often depend on alternative means of transportation such as boardwalks, boats, and snowmobiles. Crews are currently working to clear debris from runways in Bethel to restore air travel.
