UAB Dismisses Trent Dilfer Following Disappointing Start and Controversial Hire

UAB has dismissed Trent Dilfer as head football coach after a disappointing start to the season. The decision, announced on a Sunday night, comes just two seasons into his tenure, during which he compiled a record of 9-21. Currently, the Blazers sit at 2-4, having lost three consecutive games by substantial margins.

Reasons for Dismissal

Mark Ingram, the athletics director at UAB, expressed regret over Dilfer’s departure. He stated that the team’s performance did not meet the winning standards expected by the program. Ingram highlighted the necessity to move forward in the best interests of the team.

Dilfer’s Coaching Journey

  • Hired in November 2022 despite no collegiate coaching experience.
  • Previously coached Lipscomb Academy in Nashville for four years.
  • Inheriting a team with a 7-6 record in 2022, he recorded 4-8 in his first season.
  • In his second season, the Blazers finished with a 3-9 record.

Recent Performance

This season, UAB secured victories against Alabama State and Akron. However, they suffered significant defeats to Navy, Tennessee, Army, and Florida Atlantic, with the latest loss being a 53-33 setback.

Defensive Struggles

UAB’s defense has struggled immensely, allowing an average of 41.3 points per game, making it the worst in college football.

Future Leadership

In the wake of Dilfer’s dismissal, UAB has appointed Alex Mortensen as the interim head coach. Mortensen, who previously served as the offensive coordinator, is the son of the late ESPN reporter Chris Mortensen.

This transition aims to provide continuous support for the student-athletes as the program looks to redirect its path this season.
