Bay Area Faces Heavy Rainfall: Month’s Worth in Just 24 Hours

The Bay Area is bracing for a heavy downpour as a significant storm is set to deliver a month’s worth of rain in less than 24 hours. According to the National Weather Service, San Francisco will feel the brunt of this storm on Monday.

Forecast Details

Meteorologist Dalton Behringer highlighted the timing for the rainfall. The heaviest precipitation is expected late Monday morning through the evening hours. Specific forecasts include:

  • San Francisco: Approximately 0.82 inches, mostly in the afternoon between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.
  • Oakland: Expected to receive around 0.8 inches, predominantly from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Walnut Creek (East Bay): Forecasted to accumulate about 0.88 inches by Monday evening.
  • Santa Cruz Mountains: Anticipated totals may reach 1.5 inches, with the most intense rain before 11 p.m.
  • North Bay: Around half an inch of rainfall is expected mainly between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Timing of the Storm

Rainfall across the Bay Area is expected to increase throughout the day on Monday, with isolated showers also possible into Tuesday morning. However, additional accumulation will likely be minimal, generally less than a tenth of an inch, with some fortunate areas possibly receiving a quarter inch.

Impact and Expectations

Despite the heavy rainfall, Behringer noted that October is typically a drier month for the region. San Francisco usually records an average of 0.94 inches of rain in October. This storm, therefore, has the potential to deliver nearly all of the month’s precipitation in just one day.

Overall, while the storm is notable, meteorologists do not foresee any major flooding issues arising from this weather event. The pattern of rainfall appears typical for this time of year in the Bay Area.
