Big 12 Basketball Teams Ranked in Preseason AP Top 25 Poll

The BYU Cougars have made history by securing a top-10 ranking in the preseason Associated Press men’s basketball poll. Released on Monday, the poll places BYU at No. 8, marking the highest preseason ranking the program has ever achieved. This momentous ranking reflects a significant leap for the Cougars, as it is only the seventh time they have been included in the preseason top 25.
Historic Rankings and Previous Standings
Last featured in the preseason poll in 2010-11 at No. 24, BYU’s previous high ranking was No. 12 prior to the 1972-73 season. Last year, the Cougars finished the season ranked No. 13 in the final AP poll, with a record of 26-10. They secured a third-place tie in the Big 12 regular season and made it to the Sweet 16 in Kevin Young’s inaugural year as head coach.
Key Players and Expectations
This year’s expectations are heightened, largely due to the arrival of standout recruit AJ Dybantsa. Coupled with a strong recruiting class and notable transfers such as Rob Wright III, the team also boasts returning talent, including All-Big 12 performer Richie Saunders. The combination is expected to propel BYU forward this season.
Upcoming Season Schedule
The Cougars will begin their season on November 3 against Villanova at the T-Mobile Center in Las Vegas. This game is part of the Hall of Fame series, which showcases leading college basketball programs.
