2 Killed in Massachusetts Plane Crash on Highway During Nor’easter Storm

A tragic plane crash occurred on a major highway in Massachusetts, claiming the lives of two individuals onboard. The incident transpired during the morning rush hour on a Monday, coinciding with a nor’easter that brought heavy rain and high winds to the region.

Details of the Incident

The small aircraft, identified as a Socata TBM-700, crashed onto Interstate 195 in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, approximately 50 miles south of Boston. Eyewitnesses reported a large plume of black smoke rising from the wreckage.

  • Passengers: Agatha Perkins, age 66

Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III confirmed that both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities were released shortly after the incident.

Motorist Safety

Fortunately, no motorists were seriously injured as a result of the crash. State police reported that a woman, whose vehicle was struck by debris, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Crash Investigation

The Massachusetts State Police revealed that the plane might have been attempting to land at New Bedford Regional Airport when the crash occurred. Initial reports indicated that the pilot had not submitted a flight plan to the airport.

The National Transportation Safety Board has initiated an investigation into the accident. The FAA stated that it was unable to provide detailed information due to the ongoing government shutdown.

Highway Closure

Following the crash, Interstate 195 was closed in both directions near the site, prompting significant disruptions during rush hour. The highway reopened partially by the afternoon.

Community Response

Dartmouth’s Mayor Jon Mitchell expressed condolences to the Perkins family, noting the fortunate absence of severe injuries among highway motorists. He referred to the crash as a miraculous incident, given the chaotic weather conditions.
